Discipline

| Hello,I am a Guyanese teacher and would be very grateful to know what methods are used to discipline students in UK especially those who do not adhere to school rules and comply with class work. |

I am teaching at a school in Newpport Pagnell, Milton Keynes area. I have found that there is a lack of discipline. The administration is to scared of loosing students and or offending the parents that the most of the time the students just get a stern talking too. Sometimes if the students do not do claswork they are required to stay in a break detention and do it??!! The problem is that the lower KS3 students will follow this procedure (at least most of them), but the older students could care less, and they have figured out that the school/teachers/administration really does not do anything about it. In the USA where I came from If students acted the way many of these students do they would be out on their butt. Parents would be at the school asking if their child could please come back.
I have found that if any discipline is going to occur it has to come directly from ME and they studentes eventually realize I have not screwing around. |

| I teach in Luton, not far from Milton Keyes and I am finding exactly the same sorts of issues that webfowler has described. Also, as a form tutor I've had the "joy" of reading letters home from the headteacher in regards students who need to be internally excluded. It apologizes for having to send home "distressing news" and ensures the parents that incentive plans will be put into place to help the students avoid any future issues. As for the "internal exclusion" itself: the student works on a computer during class time with a member of staff with whom they have good repoire, but are allowed to mingle freely during morning break and lunch (and often between and during classtime as well.) The kids LOVE being internally excluded and actually TRY to get this "punishment". This would NEVER fly back in the States. In fact, some of the offenses would result in expulsion back home...behaviour is the biggest issue here. |
