How many times is it reasonable for your HOD to pop into your lessons unannounced and have a look around?

As many times as they want. It's generally no big deal, just doing their job. At the end of the day it's their head on the chopping block if the depts not delivering.
Although, it is a bit strange at first. When I first came here (a million years ago now) I had not really experienced this before. However, it is now just part of the routine. I recommend that you use this as much as you can for your professional development and pick the brains of a competant and experienced teacher (hopefully)!

Thanks, it can seem daunting and sometimes like I'm being reviewed on the quiet. I guess its just a difference between policies.

hi,
So long as the HOD does not interfere with your teaching,it would be acceptable once a week when you are new (1yr)
Have a chat with him/her and ask for the objective ofscanning you class,it could be for moral support! It sounds like you are getting fed up and pre-empting that resentment would be a good idea.
I have been there,in short; it was not nice.
Regards,

It’s a good idea; I luckily do get on well with school management so it does make the chat easier. I suppose its best to talk sooner rather than later. Thanks for your help.

Where you teaching at the moment?
