Are you sure you want to teach directly in the city? I am from near DC, and I would suggest teaching in the surrounding areas. I would specifically look into Fairfax and Montgomery Counties.
There are metro stops that take you from the city into the counties. You could live in the city and commute to an outer school system.
I would suggest doing this, unless you are comfortable with a very high poverty rate and severe discipline problems. And the surrounding areas of DC are very diverse, very interesting, pay a lot, and have some fantastic award-winning schools.
Whatever you do: Stay away from South East DC.
