| Thank you very much, I was a bit concerned about how to handle it. I am registering with the Scotland General Teaching Council because another agency told me they won't even look into hiring you if your not registered first. I really want to make that move so I'm hoping that this will help me out, though if I end up in England I've spent 95 dollars for nothing. Oh well! |

Hi everyone,
I registered with Bluewave and uploaded all my necessary documents, except the Police Clearance record (which I'm waiting on).
However, I received a reply from Bluewave stating that they couldn't determine my eligibility to teach in the UK based upon their standards.
According to Bluewave (and the original post in this topic), to be considered, someone in the United States must have one of the following:
* Bachelors/Masters of Education
* Post graduate teaching qualification
* US teaching credential
* Are a qualified teacher and have recent
teaching experience.
I have my BA and MA in English plus several years of tutoring English as a Second Language.
I have 4.5 years teaching experience: 3 years teaching on the University level and 1.5 on the Secondary level. I have a certified document from my state stating that I'm a highly qualified teacher and am able to teach English on the secondary level.
I suppose, before I get my hopes too high, my question is, are these qualifications enough to be determined an eligible candidate for Bluewave?
Currently, I'm filling out the CV template attached to the e-mail sent to me and am going to resubmit all the documentation; but, I just wanted to know if I have the qualifications for Bluewave or not.
Thanks for any info. :) |

Hi Britomart,
From what you've written here, it SEEMS that you do meet the requirements. Let's double check:
-You aren't counting tutoring and teaching as the same thing are you? Tutoring is important for education, but it doesn't count in this instance.
-You are talking about actual teaching experience as a teacher hired to the staff of a school right? Teaching in after school programs and community programs aren't what they are looking for under the heading of "teaching experience."
-Your teaching experience is in the subject you are applying for correct? This is a must.
-You're BA major or MA is in the subject you are applying for correct? (Special footnote here: This is a different educational system from what we are use to. Multiple undergraduate majors may cause some confusion...especially later when you start working for QTS. Just be patient and explain carefully, but these things do work themselves out.)
-I see you wrote that you've been recognized by your state as a qualified teacher. You do mean that you have state certification to teach in the subject for which you are applying, right?
-What you are applying to teach here is one of the categories Bluewave is looking for, right? (Just check the list in the "Teacher Search" area of this website.)
I don't want to sound like a Negative Nancy or like I'm treating you like a dullard. That's not my intent....just clarification really. If you've answered "Yes" to all of these questions, then I think your answer is that you indeed meet Bluewave's qualifications and it's probably a case of miscommunication. Always bear in mind that this a different system and different terms mean different things. If this is the case, try explaining your position differently. I could give examples of miscommunications I've had (not with Bluewave mind you...), but as I've already written quite alot I'll leave it here for now.
I really hope this helps you. Good luck.

Hi Meli,
Thank you for your response.
I answered Yes to all of the above questions. In fact, I've been teaching in public schools in my state for 6 years. I have a Statement of Eligibility qualifying me as a teacher for my subject.
My BA and MA are both in English, but not education. However, I have passed the Alternative License Program in my state and have been issued a Statement of Eligibility to teach Secondary English.
And, since I've actually been teaching the subject in the public school system, I believe that counts as qualification in my area, although I could be wrong.
I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Alternative Licensing program, so I don't mean to speak down to you. However, this is how it works in my state: I submit my University transcripts to the Department of Education for my state, along with a fingerprint check and four evaluations concerning my teaching ability.
I then have to pass the PRAXIS test with a minimum score. After reviewing my transcripts, my evaluations, my criminal background (or lack thereof), and my test results, the state decides if I am a highly qualified teacher for the area I applied. If so, I am issued a Statement of Eligibility which allows me to apply to schools in both my state and across the US.
Once I accept a job, I am considered a licensed teacher in the state providing me the position.
Since I passed the State requirements to teach English on the Secondary level, and I've been teaching for several years in this my area, I believe I meet Bluewave's minimum qualifications.
Correct me if I'm wrong though.
Thank you once again for your input. |
