Studing part-time
|
|
| I was wondering if it is possible to study part as ateacher and what courses are available? |
|
| I had actually wondered that as well... After a year or so of teaching, I'd really like to go back for a second Masters, but this time in Children's Lit.. I know of a couple of teachers who teach and take classes, but is it as common an occurence in England as it is in the States? |
|
I have to say, strictly from my perspective, that I know of no teachers here continuing their studies. In the US, I was always taking courses, and colleagues were as well. Not sure if it's the same everywhere here, or just my area? Maybe someone else will comment on this?

Hi,
One of our English teachers just finished her Master's degree and so is leaving to take a better position. I've been out on a little 4 day mini-course similar in style to the kinds of teacher development course we have in the States. So in essence, yes it is done over here...its just no where near as common as it is in the States mainly because it really doesn't relate to pay increases or continued certification as it does in the States. |

Speaking of courses . . .
I'm taking a 'just-for-fun course this fall -- studying Italian at the ICI in London (Italian Cultural Institute). Not only does the town I live in have the distinction of having the largest percentage of Italians in any city in the UK (15%!), but I have a little Italian blood in me, and more importantlly, I love Italy. So this Christmas, I'll hopefully be better able to communicate on my trip to Sorrento!
The ICI has a website for anyone wanting more info. In addition to the classes, there's a library of thousands of volumes, films, an authentic cafe, and more -- all in Knightsbridge! The classes are Saturdays or Sundays, mornings or afternoons (they run 4 three-hour sessions). After three 10-week terms, you've completed the first year. If I'm successful, I'll even try another year! I think it will be a nice diversion, too, to be on the 'other side of the desk.'
I'm looking forward to it!
