Thomas,
I sent a package to myself before I moved, it was about two-hundred dollars for 62 pounds. I also checked two bags at about 70 pounds each, the over weight baggage fee for American Airlines was just 25 dollars so totally worth. As for carrying it on public transport, it is more annoying than anything. Depending on where you will be living after you arrive there different ways to go about it and differing degrees how difficult it may be.
When I traveled to London previously I had two huge suitcases for a two week vacation and I managed them on my own on the underground. Most of the trains leaving from Heathrow should have baggage areas where you can put your bags and then sit next to them. (This is on the Tube, and this is the cheapest way.)
You can take the Heathrow Express, which is faster, but more expensive, and a little easier. The train goes from Heathrow Airport into Paddington Street train station, which has a tube stop acrossed from it if you need to travel on from there, or you could catch a cab from the train station with all your things.
A cab will cost about £60 into the city minimum I'd say, but is the easiest way with all of that luggage. But if you are teaching and living in the city and the stop closest to your accomodation is on the Picadilly line the tube might be easier. Let me know where you will be living, bags you'll be taking and I'll see if I can help you work out a plan! |

Thanks Jess, I finally just trimmed it down to the 100lb limit, stuffed my carry on to the bursting point and left. The agency paid my cab fare out here to Dagenham. I'm staying in a dorm type building owned by the LEA. Start work on Mon. morning. It's nice to be surrounded by teachers here. Some I've met are actually working at the same school. I'm hearing mixed feelings about the quality of the school itself. Opinions seem to be based mostly on people's prior experiences. I guess I'll just have to find out first hand.
As always, I hope all of you will continue to post/correspond with me. I seriously can't express to you how helpful it is. Finally I've found web access......
I can't wait to explore some more. Bought an oyster card and got a phone yesterday. What a zoo. Been awhile since I've lived in a city without a car....
: )

| I'm glad it all worked out in the end! A cab is certainly the easiest way to get around, I hate messing about with lots of luggage on public transport (but I hate spending money more!) Keep us updated on what is going on and how you are getting on with all the work. It is a change thats for sure, and a bit of wha tmakes it hard is just being away from everything your used to. Don't get discouraged, just reflect on what's happened and think of how to improve, then leave it behind. Good luck! |

| So exhausting. I think the politics may be worst than the kids. Amazing.... |

Hey all, just a quick update. Carly called me last week. Sent me to worcestor to check out a school. It turned into a full on interview with the govenors and I walked away with a new job and a big raise. Thanks Bluewave! Anyway, I'll be moving out of Barking and Dagenham over the break (honestly I won't miss it here) to start in January. Any advice?? Anyone know the area??
Anyone buy a car yet??
