QTS: the journey

Jess,
Start now with these VERY easy steps.
1) Save some copies of different kinds of student work which you have marked.
2) Save any copies of notes from parents or students to you.
3) Keep a record of any communications with parents...phone call log or copies of letters home.
4) Get any teaching assistants who work with you to write a quick note in your support.
and
5) Keep copies of any official records you have to make for the school and keep copies of your mark book.
You don't have to do anything more than collect the evidence now and save it to use with your mentor next year or over the summer. Collecting the evidence really is the hard part....and by the way, if you have stuff from the States in any of these categories you MAY use it as well. I even included my teacher evaluations from my previous school.
Good luck and if you need anything, you know how to get ahold of me. |

Hi all.
As you know I passed both my QTS and Core standards at the begining of Februrary. My certificate came at the begining of the week. As soon as I turned in a photocopy of that certificate, I received my new contract with pay raise back-dated to the date on the certificate.
As you can see from my previous posts, the process was very easy. I was required to collect at least one piece of evidence for each standard in both Q-band and C-band, but since they over-lapped one piece sometimes covered 2 or 3 standards. Evidence could be marked work, testimonial letters, photographs, my actual classroom, lesson observations, photocopies of my mark book, any letters or cards or emails received from students or parents...etc. It was really more time consuming than difficult.
I was given a time limit to complete it by the university of Sept 2008 initially, but as you can see it was more than sufficient. Of course, I started collecting evidence my first year. It really is not difficult as long as you are in a supportive department and very worth it.
I recommend to anyone who even thinks they may want to persue qualified status here to just keep a folder for bits of evidence.

Just a little bit of information I picked up yesterday...word of warning type stuff.
Another teacher from my school is nearing the end of his QTS journey. Like for me, the school paid for everything including an extra non-contact period since he was nearing the end of his four year limit. As soon as the assessor scheduled the date for the final assessment and assured the other teacher that he was definately going to pass it, this teacher gave the school notice that he was going to apply for other jobs.
Here's the warning bit: The school has now told him that the cost of his training will be reimbursed to the school from his pay. They are apparently allowed to do that. I mean staying at least 6 months with the school that has invested so much in your training is just good manners, but it seems as though there's also a legal aspect to it as well that I'm not clear on.
Anyway, thought you might like to know. |

Wow -- interesting to know. I wonder where the 'clause' is about that? I know I never received anything, nor signed such a contract, stating that if I left after earning QTS that they could re-coup any extra costs (not that I had any).
Let us know if you get more details regarding how they can legally do this? It's good for everyone to know. |

| I'll keep my ears open for more details. I know I didn't sign anything to that effect when I set out to do my QTS...unless it was in microscopic print on the initial cost of course form I submitted. |
