QTS: the journey

Hi all,
I've finally got some more information on that situation where the school is refusing to pay for the remainder of QTS programme for an OTT teacher:
Bear in mind that this particular teacher is rather cocky, rule-bending personality. Can be quite fun to be around, but he does tend to get himself into trouble. He has been in England (at the same school) nearly all his 4 year limit and so was facing deportation in June. To help him be able to stay, the school gave him a much lighter schedule, gave him and his mentor some cover days out of scheduled classes to throw together the portfolio together, and was paying for the course. All this was costing the school big-time, but they didn't want to loose a popular core-subject teacher.
The fellow got nearly to the end of the programme...he apparently has two more visits to go...and applied to another school. This other school called to inquire and offered him the position so long as he finished the OTT programme. He didn't put in a resignation letter or give a heads-up to his intent so that the school could advertise for a replacement...a bit of salt in the wound actually.
Anyway, the school told him that he could continue to finish the OTT programme provided he pay for the remaining visits and he complained about that. So the scuttle-butt I'm hearing (not totally a reliable source) is that now because he is beng a pain about paying for the remaining programme they've withdrawn his right to have cover time to complete the programme. This effectively means that he won't be able to have the last two visits as that always requires cover time.
Staff are split on this issue as to whether the school has a legal right to do any of this. However, this teacher is in a very bad spot because he waited so late to do the OTT programme. The government will not care WHY he doesn't have QTS when the 4 years are up and he WILL be deported in June.
By the way, I was wrong about him having to pay back the cost of the entire programme. The school was simple going to STOP paying for the rest of the programme...
Take this as you will. I think the main morals here are DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE and SHOW A LITTLE COURTESY. |

| I just finished my QTS journey and if nothing else, I leaned a lot about the curriculum I didn't know before. It was a great way for me to really dig in and find out information that had escaped me otherwise. The biggest help was with levels and their descriptions. I can almost recite now all of the KS3 levels for maths by heart. I encourage anyone to go through the process just to learn more about the UK curriculum and laws etc... |
