Taxes

| For those of you who are already working in the UK, what do you do about US taxes? I interned in Mexico two years ago and the American staff members of the organization I was working with were tearing out their hair because of expat tax confusion. Do you get taxed both by the UK and the US?
I have lived abroad before, but I never had to think about taxes because I was always a lowly student or intern or someone who didn't get paid. :D :D :D |

I must admit that I had to have a lot of help on this issue from the tax advisor at my bank (HSBC). I'm a bit foggy on the details now as they did most of the work on my behalf.
Basically, I had to pay taxes as usual on what I earned during the previous years while I still lived in the States. There was also some rule about being able to proove that I am residing permanently outside the United States for a certain amount of time (I think it was 12 months...but I'm not sure). As a result, the money that I had earned and paid taxes on in the U.K. was not included in the total yearly income on the IRS forms. However I was strongly cautioned that if I had changed my mind and moved back before a complete year, I would have had to pay taxes and penalties on this income. (I would have also been able to request some of the U.K. taxes back.)
Really, I know that's not much help. My biggest suggestion is to get someone who's qualified to help you. The folks at HSBC were big help...not plugging them really cause as a bank they kind of stink, but in this case they were right on. Also, the IRS website had information and they do have an email question site where you can get some clarification.
Wish I could help more. ;-) Good luck. |

| Thanks, Meli. I just wanted to make sure that I would still have money to live on after taxes. :) :) :) |
