2 Aussie subject English teachers + kids; possibility of working near one another?

| Christmas greetings from Down Under. I've just come accross your site and am pleased to have read a few threads on this forum indicating that moving to the UK to teach, with accompanying spouse and/or children has been a positive experience.
My husband and I are both highly qualified, family minded subject English teachers in our early 30s who would be looking to gain employment (one full time position + one part time position) close to a suitable nursery school/child care for our two son and *within close proximity of one another* (either at the same or a nearby school).
Ideally we would prefer to live and work in a small community than commute to/from or reside/work in a larger city.
I am mainly hoping someone could advise us on the liklihood of "twin" positions such as these becoming available, and if/how this agency would be able to provide support in helping us find available positions such as these.
Many thanks in advance! |

Hi there,
I think that this would be possible...kind of depends of the needs of whatever area you are going to. My best suggestion at this point would be to address this with the folks at Bluewave. There's always the possibility of one getting a job and then the other applying in the area once you've arrived...look at the work permit requirements.
Good luck to you

| I would say it is definetly possible, multiple openings come up each year within the same schools and often in the same departments, I think there will be about 3-4 new openings in my department alone at the end of summer term. Also at the school I am teaching at a couple from New Zealand found positions together, one in Foods and the other in Science. Best of luck to you! |

Oh, that's great. We'd certainly be happy working at the same school but even working at different schools not-too-far-away-from-one-another would be fantastic.
As I'm entitled to British citizenship by patrially and my husband's parents were born in the Netherlands, we don't expect much of a problem in gaining working visas.
I hadn't considered applying for one position prior to departure and the second position on arrival!!! Great advice, espcially as I imagine it would be sensible for one parent to be more available during the children's settling in period.
Which makes me wonder - would a single teachers wage in the UK comfortably support a family of 4?
Thanks so much for your replies.

I think you'd struggle quite a bit unless you had a lot of savings as a cushion for you. I live here on my own and am making a level 7 or 8 (sorry can't remember) unqualified wage at 20,133 or something like that, it ends up being about 1,300 per month. I pay 365 to rent a room in a house including bills. With 4 of you you wouldn't have that luxury in that area and two bedroom houses are flats start around 450-550 per month without bills, plus transportation and food I think would be rather uncomfortable.
However, I cam as a newly qualified teacher and so didn't recieve any extra money because of that, the school can, if it wants, pay you at a qualified rate for the number of years experience you have and you may end up with more money than what I've mentioned.
Good luck!
P.S. Where are you thinking of moving near? Any certain places? |
