| Thanks Meli, Soory I have taken time to log back in. I was out of town.I am so happy that you spent time explaining to me more than I had actually asked. I found the information very very useful. My area of specialisation is Biology and Chemistry but I am comfortable teaching Physics too. I have been teaching resource science which involves all the three basic science subjects. Once again thanks. |

Hello,
I am a elementary school teacher in Texas, USA. I have been a special education teacher and am now a dyslexia specialist. Does anyone know how students with dyslexia are taught in the UK? Are there any special programs for them? Is there a need for teachers specializing in dyslexia? Thanks.

Hi Akin and Nicole.
The easiest way to find a job here in the UK from abroad is to post with one of the agencies like Bluewave. I haven't had any dealings with anyone else but Bluewave, but I can at least say that they are very supportive of the teachers they recruit. I recommend them in a heartbeat.
Dyslexia is more frequently acknowledged and addressed specifically over here than it was in Ohio. As someone with Dyslexia myself, I'm not sure that the diagnosis of and use of the term Dyslexia is exactly the same on both sides of the ocean, but there is definately common ground. I would definately say that being able to list yourself as specifically skilled in being able to support students with Dyslexia would be considered an bonus. However, as I said elsewhere I don't think there is much of a market over here for recruiting special education teachers alone. I think you'll probably find more success if you are say a maths, science, or English teacher who also has special education skills.
In other words, when you post yourself with Bluewave do have yourself list under special education, but also focus on your specific subject area as well (or maybe even emphasize that part). For some reason, they don't seem to have the enormous difficult getting special education teachers over here that I observed we had in the States.
I hope that helps.
