Hi everyone! It's been really informative reading through the forum. I have looked at a few different agency websites, and I'm not sure which is the best option. I'm thinking one) which could get me enough job(s) most quickly, but also wondering how they get paid? Is it a percentage of what you make? A flat fee? Do the schools pay the agency? Has anyone tried other agencies/know someone who has? One more ques: Roughly what percentage of international teachers are teaching temp vs. long-term positions? I thought it was more temp work, but there are a few people talking about waiting to hear about permenent positions before going overseas.... Thanks!

Hi,

I can only speak about my experience. I went through Bluewave and they were paid by my school for access to my info and setting up the interview. Bluewave then helped ease my transition over here with an initial place to stay and a contact mobile phone. They also touched base with me through the first 5 months or so to make sure I was ok.

Initially I was hired for a temporary position (for someone on maternity leave), but a Newly Qualified Teacher in my department quit abruptly and I was offered her position. When I arrived there was 3 teachers from Canada: 2 on temporary contracts and 1 on a permanent contract.

Hope that helps some.

Bluewave isn't the agency that did my placement but I liked that they had these message boards so I always check in here to see what questions others have. My agency did the same as Bluewave though and were paid by the school to get my information. I had to go to their offices in London when arrived to sign paper work and what not.

At my school the same agency has placed about 8 overseas trained teachers this year. Myself and an Australian trained teacher have been here since the beginning. 3 Jamacian teachers arrived later in the year and are still at the school and then another American teacher came after Easter break 2 other teacher that I'm not sure where they came from left very quickly. I had a full year contract and it has currently not been renewed since the school had an overabundance of teachers apply for the 4 positions they had open in my department. Other people get lucky and their school doesn't really advertise their position. If you get QTS they have a better case for keeping a foreign trained teacher. I couldn't handle the pressure to do QTS in my first year abroad (and my first year teaching ever) so I didn't and in the end it did mean they advertised my job, but there is always the chance of something else coming up. After May 31st I become quite marketable as no British trained teachers can apply for jobs if they already hold one. I don't know what I'll do but I'm okay with whatever happens. Hope that helped.
