I'm afraid Im a bit of a work-aholic, so I am not the best person to answer this question. In the begining I was working long hours all the time and calling shopping my free time. However, I've just spent the entire weekend reading a pleasure book. I guess it depends on how you work. There's certainly the opportunity to work yourself to death here, but it isn't a requirement for the job. Like everything else, it's hardest at the begining when you are learning the system.
The one thing I'm still struggling with is the lack of organized arts facilities. I'm use to being able to sign up for some open studio time to gain access to a model and other creative people. However, I haven't found anything remotely like that here, so I'm suffering from serious withdraw.
There are gyms here. There are nice parks here. There are pubs and night clubs here. Just depends on what you are looking for really...so long as it's not open studio time with an art model.
Supposedly teachers at my school are suppose to have a lesson plan form filled in for every class, every day. However, no one actually does this on a regular basis. Most teachers just jot down notes on what they want to accomplish...etc unless they are being observed and then they fill out the form.

Thanks so much Jess and Meli. Your replies really helped a lot. I'm most definitely not a pub type, but a mother who wants to spend time with my family - explore the area, outdoor activities, playing tennis and spending time on my art/craft hobbies.

There's another teacher at my school who is originally from South Africa and came over with her entire family. She's been here quite a while...I think at least 6 years, but I'm not sure. She kind of stays to herself a bit...
I'll mention this site to her and see if she'd be interested in contributing some posts. Can't promise anything though. |
