Hello, everyone. As my sign-in name suggests, I accepted a job in Banbury. Now I am waiting on work permits. Can anyone tell me how long this usually takes? I turned all my info and documents in to Bluewave 4 weeks ago. I am beginning to get anxious since I still have to do my visa after my work permit and, only then, actually buy my plane tickets. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

I've heard different times... It only took a couple weeks for me the first time (when Bluewave applied for me), but it took a little bit longer for me the second time (when my school put in the application). I think it really just depends how busy the Home Office is when it comes in. Don't worry though, it'll come.

I'm waiting for a new one (been here two years, but switching schools), and have been waiting abou a month now.

A friend in the US just got hers -- I think it was also 4-5 weeks. Pretty normal. Don't sweat it -- it WILL arrive!

Whie you're waiting, make sure you have the visa packag ready to go. Go online, look at all the documents you'll need to send to support your online application. For example, they'll want a few months bank statements, and I always did online banking, so I had to get official copies from my bank (couldn't just print out the last few months statements from my online banking -- rather unofficial, and anyone could make them, so it wasn't acceptable). That sort of thing.

Something to do while you're waiting.

My work permit came through pretty quickly, and don't stress too much about the visa, the turn around time is pretty quick, if it makes you feel better paying about $16 for next day delivery is good and they send it back just as quickly through Fed Ex.

As English Teacher said, get all your visa supporting things ready to go so as soon as the Work Permit arrives all you have to do is put the work permit info and send it off.

Now I have a question of my own for other people who've been here and and switching jobs. I got a bit of info that it will be a pain to get back in at the airport from the US after my summer holiday since my work permit will still be processing, does anyone have any info about this.

English Teacher I saw that you had to get a new visa and they won't just let you keep the one you have. Do you know what the info on your visa says that makes it non-transferable to the new job? I'm curious because mine is good for another year and just says, let the Home Office know of any changes, and I think I was hoping in vain that this means I wouldn't need to pay for a new visa in my new position.

Any help is certainly appreciated.

Right. Mine is a 4-year visa, and I've only been here 2 years. Yes, it says to tell the Home Office if you change jobs, and the bit that isn't explicit on there, but they'll tell you when you 'inform' them, is that . . . you need a new visa. It'll be 360 quid if I do it from here. (Less form the US, but I won't be there.) Not thrilled with that aspect (the money).

And Bluewave verified that info. So I'm waiting for the new work permit so I can go into London and get the visa (ILR this time, BW says).

My family is in Holland, so I'll just finish my summer travel there, then go into Lunar House in London and re-do the visa then. (I think BW said I have 6 months to do it, after the job switch, but I of course just want to get it finished.)

Hope that helps.
