Update:

Just got a call from BW, and today, 7 weeks and 3 days after the (new) job offer, they have received my work permit back from the Home Office, and are sending it out to me tomorrow!

So, if that sets your mind at ease, it can take a while, but it does really happen. (I'm sure this is a very busy time of year for Home Office.)

That's about how long it took for mine. Seven or eight weeks.

Sorry -- I said I would be applying for ILR -- should have said FLR (Further Leave to Remain, not Indefinite).

At any rate, the good thing is that it's here and I can get that ball rolling.

Thanks English Teacher for that info. Now I'm worried because my work permit hasn't even been filed yet, they are still filling in paper work and I have to leave the country (summer holiday back in the US) and I've heard I'll have trouble getting back into the UK with a work permit in progress, I've tried e-mailing various places but don't get any info, I hate talking on the phone, but I have a feeling a day of calling around is instore for me. Anyone have any info on this getting back in at the airport thing?

Thanks to everyone who responded. I got my work permit earlier this week...a little over 5 weeks after submission. Hope that means they are beginning to catch up.
