I found this on the BBC site:

"Pupils should be taught other languages such as Mandarin in school, a report for the British Council says. The current dominance of the English language poses "serious" economic and political disadvantages for the UK, the study claims.

UK graduates who speak only English will lose out to multi-lingual workers from other countries, the council says. "

I think this is over the top, we already have enough problem with lack of interest from pupils stuyding German and French. Why introduce more??

Mandarin?? Lord. How about we teach them some Spanish? or Spanglish? Either one is fine with me. Are there not loads of studies in Child Development that unequivocally state, in general, children and adults are less likely to learn a foreign language successfully the older they get?

True, we should teach languages to kids in playgroup and kindergarten. My stepfather was in India pre-war and used to tell me about the English and Indian kids who would cheerfully mix both languages using the most appropriate words from both. The parents (older of course) couldn't understand the kids unless they spoke just one or the other language.

I agree with you both, Spanish seems a much more useful language to learn especially at a young age; especially due to its Latin basis.

I think it would be better to concentrate on the languages that are already taught! As a nation we Brits are ignorant when it comes to languages - we expect everyone to speak English. Something that is reflected by the poor uptake of language based subjects at KS4.
