where to go...

hey everybody,
I am finishing my B.Ed program in August here in remote remote Canada and have had an interview with TimePlan agency and am trying to decide where to teach. what does someone familiar think about the Brighton or Canterbury area? Is it expensive to live there or is it different in all parts of Southeast england? I have also heard Leeds and Birmingham are cheaper to live as well. Also, if anyone has any feedback on TimePlan that would be quite helpful. I want to go somewhere with lots to see and do, but where students are generally well-behaved and living costs are low.Help! |

| Hi, I've not taught in Brighton or Canterbury but I know that generally the more north you go the less expensive it gets to live..Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds will be cheaper to live than south. I think Brighton and Canterbury are quite touristy and so that makes more expensive. What I did before I came over was to check out some rental sites on the net in the places I was thinking of going to see prices - they call them "estate agents" here. Don't know about Timeplan - just make sure that they look after you when you arrive (not all agencies do this!) Hope that helps |

Leeds and Birmingham are great places in the UK. Both are fairly large and offer loads to do. Birmingham is the 2nd largest city in the UK and this is reflected in the prices; although cheap accommodation is available. I found Leeds to be quieter in the evening.
There is a UK area guide on the Bluewave site which I found useful. |

| Thanks guys for your help! I have been really interested in Southern England teaching positions. Does anyone have any more suggestions of fun, affordable areas? I have been looking at Dorset, East and West Sussex, Kent and South Hampton-living directly on the ocean I think i need to live somewhere I can see it pretty easily-any feedback about schools and/or students? Also, has anyone any experience with teaching at a private all boys or all girls school? Last question, about how much should I pay per month if sharing a decent 2 bedroom flat or should I scrap all this and try to live with a family? Thanks-sorry for all the questions. |

| I am in London and it is really expensive!! I am hoping to move somewhere else for September. I have a number of friends who live in the Sussex area and they seem to cope fine. I don't think it is as cheap as the North but my understanding is that there are less teaching opportunities in these areas. The South West is a really nice but again there are not as many positions. I really wanted to start my UK career there but just could not gain a position!! |
