Things I missed while living in England:
-pumpkin pie--Libby's is hard to find even in November
-Hershey's chocolate
-sports other than football
-sunshine!
-socialising that did not involve alcohol
-optomism as a way of approaching life....
-good Mexican food
-being treated as an equal by the majority of the people I encountered |

Interesting list!
I made my pumpkin pie with sweet potatoes this year -- with the rest of the ingredients the same, it came out quite good. Just steamed some 'til they were mushy, and made the regular recipe.
Yes, having lived on the Mexican border for the past 7 years, you can imagine I also miss good Mexican food. As a matter of fact, I was offered 'guacamole' the other day that was mostly sour cream! LMAO! Well, not sure where they got that idea, but I'll pass. Been invited to a Christmas party, and tacky as it was, the invitation had blanks to fill in with what we're bringing! Anyway, I wrote home-made tortilla chips and guacamole. (Who asks guests to bring food? I had a housewarming and a Thanskgiving dinner, and did NOT ask guestts to supply the foods! LMAO!)
Try fine chocolate -- you'll never go back to cheap! :-D
Sersiously, I did want to ask what you mean about not being treated as an equal. What sort of peope are you encountering, and in what way are they treating you as better or worse than you expected (you didn't say which way it's going -- just 'unequal')? Oh, and where are you now? Sorry if I missed that in another post . . . I just noticed that you said "Things I missed while living in England," so obviously you've left. How long were you here? It's definitely very different here . . . you begin to appreciate things back home in a new way, things you took for granted whilst living in the U.S. For me, the 'honeymoon' is over, and reality has set in. I'll just keep 'soldiering on' as Carly likes to say, and I'll see what it shakes out like at the end of the year.
Right on the socialising and alcohol -- our department has get-togethers often, with lots of alcohol(!), but no real pressure for the non-drinkers. And yes, everything we do socially centers around work, probably because we work around the clock and therefore have little time to make other friends?? LOL. That's my take anyway. But I do love football, so that part of life is fine with me!
It's already been quite a year for me -- and we're only just finishing first term. I wonder what I'll feel about all of this at the end of the first year. |
