Are teachers in the UK allowed vacation days throughout the year. Do teachers use them or is it discouraged to take personal vacation days if the entire school is not out on holiday?

Wow...So sorry no one replied to your querries sooner. Those are interesting questions as quality of life is important for maintaining sanity.

I'm not over there yet (moving in 2 weeks), but I can tell you that I am not planning on taking any personal days beyond sick days if really needed. The school year has plenty of substantial, evenly spaced holidays...not like it is here in the States. There's a week off in October, 2 weeks off at Christmas/New Year's, a week in February, 2 weeks in April, a week end of May/begining of June, and then 6 weeks for summer vacation begining July 23rd. It sounds kind of nice really.

Any one over there want to provide ground-level insight?

Yes Meli is right - given that you get so much holiday throughout the year you would be expected to be teaching during the term - especially given you can't work during the school holidays (there are no kids around) and so you could'nt make up the leave. You'll find that you get plenty of holiday!!

It is also a personal point of view. Here, were allowed to take up to 8 day off for illness, moving, flood, end of world, etc. and most peoples take it for personnal stuffs or whatsoever. So i guess i would do the same in the UK.
