Do we need to renew our working visa for teaching in UK in each year?

| Due to No Child Left Behind Act, I look forward to teaching in the UK instead. |

Hi,
Yeah, I do NOT miss that particularly stupid piece of legislation. My Mom still teaches in the Ohio and so I keep hearing about it and it only just reminds me.... I don't see myself ever teaching in the states again as a result (add the unconstitutional funding in Ohio to that mix).
Just bear in mind that teaching in England is not perfect. There are problems and struggles here as well. Best suggestion is to scan the forum for insights...I'm sorry it's not as organized by topics as was originally intended. That means it's a bit hard to find some of the info, so if after looking through the forum you find you have unanswered questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Those of us on the side of the pond like to relive some of that initial excitement by helping out the new comers.
Where are you headed? What will you be teaching? (oh, and good luck...) |

Mybe not ideally organized -- but definitely helpful in anticipating twwaching in the UK.
What will I be teaching and where -- still to be determined. Possibilities: science, history, RE. |

| Meli or does anyone else know. My post was not renewed at my school since they had about 10 qualified British teachers apply for the 4 open positions. However, a school nearby is having trouble getting people to send in paper work at all they've posted the job2 times now. My question is can I send them my resume without getting into trouble with the UK government for job hunting? I thought I wasn't allowed with my visa but it just says changes must be approved. |

Hi Jess,
Yes, you can send them your resume...or CV actually (did you keep a copy of how Bluewave formats a CV?). If hired there, the school just needs to continue your VISA with the Home Office. As I understand it, your current school will tell the Home Office that you're nolonger employeed with them and the new school will submit forms that show you are eligible to be employeed by them. I've known of Canadian & Australian teachers that have done precisely that to ESCAPE my current school. Also, when I renewed my VISA I was told by my school that I'd have to pay for it because "the VISA would follow me if I took another position so it belongs to me instead of the school."
GET REFERENCE LETTERS LONG BEFORE (i.e. now) YOU LEAVE YOUR CURRENT SCHOOL! Letters from people in your department and the support staff talking about innovative teaching, good relations with your students, assessment for learning, and how well you work with support staff/special needs students. All of these will help with your application to other school AND help towards QTS.
You can also repost with Bluewave but as you know the main recruitment rush is now over. I wish I'd known sooner, my school actually sent a representative to North Carolina to hire 2 new English teachers (neither are actually American though: 2 from Jamaica & 1 from Ethiopia...go figure).
All the best of luck Jess. I'm really REALLY pulling for you here.
