Hi, I have master's in mathematics from US university and would like to know if i need to have a teaching certificate to teach math in UK before getting teaching position or I can start teaching and get certificate in process. I don't have teaching certificate in US as I only taught lower level math classes at the college I got my degree at. Thanks a lot!

Vika, I think you will need to have a teaching qualification/license to be able to teach here even if you have a masters. you may want to check but a buddy of mine in US was trying to get over here and was in the same situation and wasn't able to do it. He's now doing an ed degree to get over. Brad

Yes, you do have to be certified or licensed in the US, but keep in mind that there are alternative certification programs in almost every state. You might see what your state offers, or a nearby state if you live near a border and the neighbouring state has a quicker alt-cert process. Just a thought . . .

Hi,
I have just completed my Bachelor's in English, Iv'e only taught ESL to adults. But, I would really like to teach in the U.K. I'm at a point where I need to make some important desicions. I am enrolled in the Master's program for Rhetoric and Composition, (Originally was in Linguistics-but they dropped this trac). WIll a Master's help me secure a position with higher pay? Do I have to have experience? If I have only 1 yr, will that help? Does anyone know if the Community College's also need people as well? Although I would be fine teaching secondary as well. Does Bluewave also help find positions in private schools? I'm assuming the pay is a lot less though?? I have 1 daughter-wondering if anyone else has brought children or family with them? Sorry somany questions! But would love any advice reallly!
Thank you!
Aimée

I was just re-reading a doc that Bluewave sent to me, and will copy-paste what they say about qualifications:

"To be able to teach in the UK you MUST have:
Minimum of 3 years undergraduate + 1 year education equivalent
OR
4 year Degree in Education & or Master in Education
OR
Current American Teaching Licensure
OR
Are a qualified teacher and have recent teaching experience

Qualifications must be from a recognised institution.

Original certificates MUST be certified (as described below).

In certain circumstances, qualifications will be assessed to ensure that they meet UK requirements."
