Rent in UK
|
|
I am interested in teaching in the UK from September and I was wondering if anyone had any idea how much rent is each week/month.
Any advice would be appreciated. |

| JennyP...it kind of depends on where you want to be. I started off teaching here in London (as most Aussies do) and the rent is definately the biggest issue. You'll find that most things cost about the same up and down the UK eg food/alcohol/eating out etc. BUT rents are very different. Basically I was paying £1000 a month for an average place in Clapham south london (a big chunk out of a £28000 salary! I'm now teaching in Manchester and my pay is about the same but I've got a really good place (2 bed flat) near centre of town and it's £650 a month. Have a look at http://www.upmystreet.com - that will give you lots of info including rents...when you get close to interview...check it out. Good luck |

| I agree with previous poster. Most places outside London are pretty similar in my experience. ive been supply teaching (tough) since I got here in Sept last year and have lived in hertfordshire, cambridge and 3 weeks in liverpool! I've paid between 600 and 700 pounds a month in each place for 2 bed flats. Some of my friends have taken a room in a shared house when they first get here which is much cheaper - 200-300. |

| Hmm...sore subject here. I think the two others have great advice on the rent situation here in the UK. BUT, be aware of the leasing agents you have to work through in order to get a place...they are like vultures. You will also have to pay security check fees (£99-£150) since you are not from the UK. Also, you will need to find out about deposits and council tax and all of those "expenses" you may not be use to paying. |

| Yes watch out for the agents here...they can be real difficult if you're not a brit. I started looking for places in the private ads in papers thus cutting out agents....also many towns/cities have "community" website where local landlords offer up their flats/houses. its been a good route for me. |
