The salary

Hi,
I'm a maths and sciences teachers from Montreal. I would like to know what kind of salary i could expect from a full time teacher's job in the U.K.? Also, how many teaching hours is a normal school day? Here in Montreal, full time means 24 x 75 minutes periods per 9 days for the teacher.
Thank you
Yves

Hi,
I'll be teaching about an hour outside of London, secondary English, and I'll be making 28,750 as a full-time teacher. My schedule is five 60-minute periods per day. The day is from 8 to 3, and includes an hour that there is no instruction while teachers are available for tutoring with students, and of course there's the lunch hour. I'll have one "duty day" per week (corridors before and after school and during lunch time).
I had heard that pay might not be that high, but I have a master's degree and a few years experience. I will have to work on getting QTS to move up the salary scale, though.
Hope this helps. |

Thank you but what is QTS? And 28,750 is in pounds? Will you teach at high school or elementary school?
I have 12 years experience at teaching so maybe i can expect a little more... |

Sorry not to be clear -- the pay I have listed IS in pounds, and secondary is the same as high school.

Oh, QTS is like certification -- it stands for Qualified Teacher Status. Here's a link where you can learn about it. We have to achieve it within four years to be able to stay and continue teaching in the UK.

Oh, and my pay is based on 8 years teaching experience with an MA, so yes, for 12 years, you would get more. It also depends on the district -- I think the bigger cities pay more. I'll be in Bedford (an hour north of London). Still good pay for the are and cost of living -- I have already found a flat for 500 (GBP) per month, and my take home will be almost 2,000 (pounds, again) per month. I should be able to enjoy all those holidays quite well!
My school has an amazing schedule -- 1 or 2 weeks off (it alternates) every 6 weeks, then 6 weeks off in summer).
Do you have a master's?
