Great information on this thread. In the school system in which I work we belong to a provincial teachers union. I was thinking about what Yves said about Canadian salary per year. After union dues and income tax, I take home 55% of my wage or less after Health Care etc. I have been teaching for 10 years-and so could I expect to get paid at the top of the Qualified teachers scale if my school district allowed it?
How does it work in the UK? Are there union dues as well? |

| I'll just answer one of those questions. The union system here baffles us Canadians. There are 3 major ones, and a few more smaller ones, and basically you choose which you want to join. The costs vary - they're in competition so you can shop around. I don't really understand the point of a union system where everyone is divided - technically half the teachers in your school could be on strike, and the other half not. Very bizarre. |

Ya, very weird! I'm not in UK yet but some friends here (in Montreal) told me that unions in UK are kinda uselesss, they don't really protecting you. Is that true?
BTW, we have a huge lack of English teachers here (around 500) so if someone is frightened at teaching kids in the UK... LOL

Hello-
I am living in Bermuda but would be interested in relocating to teach in the UK. Anyone has any suggestions?
Thanks,
Winsome |

| Yves...are you kidding me? They are looking for English teachers in Montreal? All of my relatives live there and said it is difficult to get any job unless you speak french. Is that true? |
