Challenging Pupils

| Hello, I am a MAURITIAN teacher in the move to come to teach Design & Technology in UK soon. I've heard about UK students most particularly those presenting themselves as challenging. I want to know what are challenging students. |
|
| challenging is a word they use here to mean "rude" and "abusive". the uk kids can be very tough to control. Many schools here have a problem getting teachers and so they rely on supply teachers who come in on a day to day basis (i know because its what i've been doing here!) this means the kids suffer from a lack of consistency and so the behaviour gets worse. it can be really rewarding when you get them undercontrol and they start to learn, but be prepared is the best advice i can give. The dfes website has lots of good stuff abovt behaviour management on it. |

Yes indeed! When "they" tell you that the students here have behaviour "issues" be forewarned. Of course, this all depends on the area where you teach and the type of support you have from your administration. High-poverty schools have a high turnover rate and very, very challenging students. You will also find that UK schools have little to no counseling support at schools, especially high-poverty schools. Make sure you get a very good idea about the support offered at the school...this is key. Bad support means you will be likely to return home within months out of frustration and discouragement. I have a blog where I keep reflections on my experiences here in the UK as an overseas teacher if you guys are interested.

| I agree with The American here...it's all about support. Being in a really challenging school is a huge buzz IF you've got the support from the senior team. The "easy" schools here can be pretty boring...it's not why I got into teaching. So make sure you check out the extent of support that you'll get before you take thatD&T post. Good Luck |

I've heard that UK students can be challenging.
Well, in the Jamaican context, being "challenging" ranges from:
1. being illiterate or semi-literate
2. frequently defying rules
3. being insolent and/or
4. being violent.
Thing is, several of my students specialize in "multi-tasking". They can easily do ALL of the above.
