Ok...now I'm a bit scared again.
Wow, how does any one survive under those conditions? If the British taxes are taking a third of your income, what happens when the IRS comes for its share? And if the British banks were that uptight about your having to move around a bit, how will they handle the fact that I will need to keep forwarding money to my American account just to be able to pay my student loans?
As for rentals: I keep seeing things posted online, but can't get a response back. What's the deal with that? Certainly not everyone goes through an agent if they are so unreasonably costly. How do the locals do it and why won't that also work for us?
I was hoping that I could save a little money back to be able to go places and do things on the longer school breaks... Any suggestions? |

| Ok...something can't be right about this. I started doing the math: If I pay 475pounds per month in rent and 150 pounds per month in council taxes, I'm already looking at negative numbers without considering food, utilities, transportation, incidentals, student loans, taxes withheld,...etc. What's the trick here? Surely Bluewave would not put teachers in a an impossible possition. Need input please! |

Ok...I found my math error, but I'm still in need of advice guys. Here's what I'm looking at...
22,000 pounds/year salary
-600 pounds/year council tax (******50#/month)
-140 pounds/year TV tax
-900 pounds/year electricity (rounded up)
-360 pounds/year water
-8800 pounds/year National Health insurance
-3600 pounds/student loans
---------
7,600 left for rent, food, etc (or 633 pounds/month for living costs) is that correct? That would be $116 for food and recreation if I found a place for 400 pounds/month. |

8800 pounds for insurance? Common, this is impossible, this is like 18000 dollards per year. Here it is your big mistake i guess.

Hi YvesC,
Yes, I agree it doesn't sound correct. However, I took the figure from yesterday's post by "anonymous" who says (under the heading of "income tax") that he/she has 800 pounds withheld from a monthly salary of 2200. If you multiply that by 11 months that's 8800... Like I said earlier, something doesn't seem right but as I have NO experience in this area I'm having difficulty identifying the problem. The good folks at Bluewave told me that other teachers have lived comfortably in the area to which I am headed on the salary I will be receiving. I'm not expecting a palace or anything...an efficiency would suit my needs just fine...I'm trying not to be a worry-wart, but there are SO many things that I don't know...I'm hoping for some practical advice.
