Elena's information
I got my degree as a Teacher of Languages with specialization in ESL in a Teacher Training College in Argentina. During that time I had the possibility of studying not only the English language but also the most important methodologies in the teaching of languages. Before obtaining my degree I had to go through two years of teaching practice in different schools universities and academies. I started working in a Catholic boys’ school, which later became co-ed, teaching ESL in primary school; I also worked in different private academies where I taught English for various purposes (business, tourism, medicine, etc) and also had the chance to teach university Spanish to exchange students visiting Argentina.
After six years of working in my own country I felt the need of experiencing teaching abroad. Through a British agency I got a position in a boarding school in Wantage, Oxfordshire. I was a Senior Boarding Tutor in charge of the pastoral care of the girls and also a Spanish language assistant in some classes. Teaching Spanish became a priority for me since I found great enjoyment in showing my language and culture to students who did not know much about them.
I applied for a job in Macalester College, Minnesota, USA as a Spanish Laboratory Instructor and I signed a contract for two years, 2006/07 – 2007/08. This time spent in the US was eye-opening and enriching in ways I was not expecting. I taught students from all over the world and acquired skills in Language Teaching Technologies – power point presentations, multimedia, use of internet, etc – which I would never have used in Argentina. I also got a grant to travel to California to participate in a conference about Language Technologies which I will be attending in April 2008.
Spanish has become a passion for me and I intend to continue teaching my language and culture. Once settled in UK I want to start a Masters in Spanish in order to improve and expand my knowledge of the subject.
