Charles's information
I consider myself to be a highly flexible teacher. I am considered a behavioural expert with 5 years experience as principal of a private school for juvenile delinquents, 3 years as a counsellor and the last 10 years in alternative education. During the latter I have worked with students in all subject areas both with self paced programs and direct instruction. For the most part these are students who have not been successful in the mainstream programs. With a partner, at the Westside Storefront (a satellite of Central Schools), I took all the responsibilities of the principal with respect to determining suspensions, promotions, interviews with parents, and co-ordination with ministry services. In the Winnipeg school division, I used to give in-service training to all new teachers with respect to behaviour problems in the classroom. I have always had excellent rapport with students and believe this is due to the fact that I genuinely like students, treat them with respect and fairness. My superiors describe me as a highly skilled classroom teacher. I have been an employee in School District #23 for the past 27 years, taught all age groups and most subjects including 16 years as a primary teacher.
My teaching philosophy has always been to use ‘anticipatory set’ in getting students interested/motivated to do the work at hand. I believe teaching effectively requires a certain sense of humour and fun while at the same time focussing on maximum achievement. My current supervisors will attest to these statements. I also use the term “emotional certainty” to describe the sate where required material is mastered. It means “absolutely certain” and is verifiable. With respect to preparing and implementing programs that cater to the needs of pupils, I have years of experience doing ‘Individual Educational Plans’ from grades 7-12. Over the years I have developed skill in chess. Research has shown that it activates the same areas of the brain involved with decoding language and problem solving in Math. I enjoy sharing this expertise with those interested. I have hosted provincial chess championships in British Columbia and finished 6th in the world at the 2000 Chess Olympiad computer championships for masters and grandmasters.
