Bradley's information
Currently I am teaching a 1st and 2nd grade Special Day Class. This is my first year teaching and I am really enjoying myself. I love my students and their unique personalities. I enjoy creating lesson plans that serve their abilities while meeting the content standards.
I have 16 students with disabilities ranging from autism and mental retardation to specific learning disabilities in the areas of basic reading, basic math, processing, etc. I believe in having a very structured schedule. Every day my students begin class with a morning warm up which involves practicing the alphabet. Then we move into English Language Arts groups, which rotate through three stations every 20 minutes. At the end of this time, students who have followed directions and the classroom rules earn a reward of five minutes in which they choose their activity, such as reading a book, doing an educational puzzle, or playing with counting blocks. Then the rotation is repeated so that the students have the opportunity to practice what they just learned. Next is recess, followed by 30 minutes of math intervention work in which I do lots of modelling and use manipulatives to teach number sense. After math, we go to Physical Education and then lunch. After lunch, I read a story to my students and teach concepts about print. Then we move into math groups, again consisting of three (levelled) stations that rotate every 20 minutes. When the school day is over, we line up and walk out to the buses where I wait with my students until their parents or their bus comes to pick them up.
I also believe in using behaviour management tools such as positive reinforcement. In my classroom, each of my students has a card with a grid of boxes. Each time a student completes an assignment or small group station while following the classroom rules, he or she receives a sticker. Once the sticker card is full, it can be redeemed for a prize.
