Joshua's information
As evident from not only my career choice, but also my employment and volunteer history, I am passionate about helping young people achieve their goals and dreams. This is not limited to just academic needs, but further aspects of teenagers including emotional and physical needs.
I have been involved in pastoral care of teenagers since the age of 15, in a local youth ministry serving the local community. In this role I have mentored young people through not only music and at times academic study, but also through family issues and character development.
Apart from studying Mathematics, I am a keen musician, and have been studying and performing on the Drums since the age of 8. I have also been trying to expand my musical ability by developing my guitar and vocal skills. I am passionate about meeting new friends and enjoy meeting young people and developing friendships with teenagers.
As a young graduating Mathematics Teacher, I am keen to synthesise and develop my ability to utilise technology in the classroom, as an aid to learning. Through my limited Mathematics career, I have had the chance to learn from a wide range of teachers, in a private school highly sought after in our community. There is a strong ICT presence at this school, with full classes utilising laptops throughout all key-learning areas. Furthermore, I am keen to develop and collaborate assessment that enables students learning to take place, which is often unseen in mathematics.
Professional Development to date has been a two day conference facilitated by the school currently employed at, with an in depth focus on technology and the effect this has in and out of the classroom.
When approaching the classroom and teaching, I find it crucial to aim to develop a positive relationship with students that as a result draw students to the beauty of learning. Within the mathematics classroom, I find it absolutely necessary to provide students with direction to the practical usefulness of Mathematics and why what we taught is applicable to a young persons life. As a result knowledge and understanding is seen as relevant and useful to learn. Furthermore students gain a depth of understanding that enables them to apply processes of Mathematics to everyday situations. Students are then provided with understanding as to how Mathematics fits in the world we live in and benefits to career and practical life.
As a teacher of Mathematics, I believe there is a responsibility to develop keen and capable Mathematicians, but also help shape and mould students in character and values. After my short experience, I am beginning to see the journey of continual develop of teaching, and the challenges that arise day-to-day. This is exciting, as it stirs me to continually develop new and interesting methods at connecting students to Mathematical knowledge.
