Betty-Ann's information
I have approximately three years of teaching experience in the Bahamas. The students I taught were in the age group 11-17 years old. My philosophy as a teacher is to give my students the best of me and to help them acquire skills that will last for a lifetime, hence my career field-Family and Consumer studies.
In the Bahamas I was exposed to students of varying backgrounds and I was privileged to have taught an examination group in the 9th grade, for the very first time. This was a group of 59 students and with hard work and dedication I was able to attain a 40-45% A-C passes. This was an accomplishment for me as I was told that this was an increase compared to the previous year.
The BJC (Bahamas Junior Certificate Examination) was one that required a lot of work on the part of the Teacher as well as the students. Students had to show their skills in the area of Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles and Child care & Development. This BJC examination required them to do a sewing item to show how skilled they are in the area of sewing, and a cookery practical in the presence of an examine .These practical pieces were used to measure their knowledge in the subject area from 7th grade to 9th grade.
As the teacher of Home Economics, I had to guide students in their sewing pieces, enhance their thinking, motivate them and empower them. This was a challenge that i was able to conquer, through hard work and dedication. This meant staying behind in the evenings after school, and dedicating a few hours of my free day to guide students.
I was an active leader in the GGYA (Governor General Youth Award) club at the Nassau Christian Schools. This club enabled me to understand the students better, those whom I taught as well as others. I was able to go camping with them, expose them to First Aid skills, teach them how to love and appreciate their country, as well as their natural environment. Students are taught survival techniques including kayaking, bicycle riding, rock climbing, and reading compasses amongst other skills in the GGYA club.
