Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) allows pet animals from certain countries to enter the UK without quarantine as long as they meet certain rules.

To bring your dog or cat into the UK under PETS from one of the listed countries you must have it first micro chipped, then vaccinated against rabies and then blood tested.

It must then enter the UK with an approved transport company on an authorised route. The tick and tapeworm treatment must be given not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before it is checked-in with an approved transport company that brings it into the UK.

If during your journey to the UK your pet transits an unlisted country it must remain within the perimeter of the airport of that country or secured within the vessel if travelling by sea. You will need a letter from the transport company to confirm that this was the case.

The six month rule

Your pet may not enter the UK under PETS until six months have passed from the date that your vet took the blood sample which led to a successful test result (see below). Once the vet has signed the PETS certificate and that six month period has passed, the PETS certificate is valid and your pet may enter the UK.
