Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK

QTS is a UK qualification that all British teachers must gain in order to teach in UK schools. As an overseas trained teacher you will not have QTS and therefore your qualifications are not formally recognised and strictly speaking you are considered to be unqualified. However, you can teach in the UK for up to 4 years without gaining QTS. This time begins from the moment you enter the UK on your work permit. If you are hoping to stay for a longer time period, it is important that you complete QTS as soon as possible.

You can achieve QTS by enrolling on the Overseas Trained Teachers programme (OTT). This is usually done in conjunction with your school and local education authority in the UK.
