Induction period for Newly qualified teachers
All new teachers with QTS are required to complete an induction programme, usually lasting one academic year (pro-rata for part-time NQTs), on taking their first teaching post in maintained schools and non-maintained special schools, city technology colleges, city academies, independent schools and, since September 2000, in sixth form colleges in England and Wales.
The purpose of the induction period is to try to ensure that all NQTs are monitored and supported throughout their first year of teaching after being awarded QTS. The induction period is intended to ensure that future career and professional development is based on a firm foundation. It is the head teacher's responsibility to ensure that an NQT does not teach more than 90% of a normal timetable during the period, to allow for induction to take place.
The TDA website has an area dedicated to induction, which includes the following advice on what NQTs should expect in their programme:
- 90% timetable;
- an induction tutor;
- an individualised induction programme;
- observation of your teaching with follow-up review meetings;
- a programme of professional development opportunities;
- termly assessment meetings;
- reports on your progress;
- additional support in cases of difficulties;
- a named contact in the local authority (LA);
- a recommendation on completion of induction.
NQTs may take a break between induction periods, but if the programme has not been completed within five years, they are required to apply for an extension.
